Hi, I’m James sHaw.
What would you like to know?
-
James grew up in Ottawa, Ontario, and was the youngest of five boys. In his youth, he played numerous sports, including soccer, baseball, hockey, volleyball, football, cross-country running, snowboarding, and rugby. James developed a passion for rugby and competed at the national level with the U19 Voyageurs (Eastern Ontario & Quebec) and at the varsity level with the University of Ottawa GeeGees. He now participates in club rugby with the Bytown Blues RFC and runs marathons throughout the year.
-
James is a dedicated service worker who is always looking to grow and expand his capacity to help others. He completed an Honours Bachelor of Science in Psychology, a Master of Human Kinetics in Intervention and Consultation, and a Graduate Certificate in Psychedelics and Spirituality, all from the University of Ottawa. James is pursuing education in Counselling Psychology to obtain certification as a Psychotherapist.
-
Aside from consulting, James engages in various roles in his community. He works part-time as a Street Outreach Worker with the Salvation Army Ottawa. He is also the Rugby Development Consultant for North-Eastern Ontario with Rugby Ontario. Beyond this work, James volunteers with the HALO lab at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).
Iron is the most common element on earth and has played a significant role in building our society. It’s a versatile metal that can be shaped and hardened into strong, durable structures. Best of all, it’s sustainable. When it no longer serves its original purpose, it can be recycled and reused for a newer, stronger structure later.
Your Mind has several parallels. Our frontal lobes are the leading contributors to our society’s complexity and growth. Our cortices allow for the development and expansion of culture and other high-order structures. Much like iron, our minds shape and are shaped by what surrounds us. Our brain’s plasticity allows us to form new thoughts and reshape old ones.
-
It’s James’ mission to build a robust community of athletes and performers who lead the way for their social circle. He seeks to influence the number of people working on developing their minds and relationships to build a strong and inclusive society.
-
James would not be able to realize his mission without a commitment to his clients. For this reason, he stays dedicated to meeting the needs of everyone he works with. James believes that when others commit to work with him, they deserve his full engagement.
-
There is no community or commitment without compassion. First and foremost, James’ goal is to connect with each of his clients and understand them wherever they are on life’s journey. James prides himself on being an ally to the BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. You will always find a safe space in the Iron Minds community.

About the logo
The logo incorporates both a moth and a lotus to give the meaning of balance and positive transformation. The moth is known to be drawn to sources of light and only come out at night. This helps us remember to follow the light at the end of the tunnel no matter how difficult or dark a challenge may be. Moths undergo a metamorphosis before reaching their final form, much like the goal of Iron Minds is to help others achieve a positive transformation in their life both physically and mentally.
The lotus has the ability to flourish even in challenging environments. This symbolizes the resilience that us humans have and the capacity to overcome obstacles in life. In many cultures the lotus also signifies balance and harmony. The lotus is meant to communicate James’s goal to help others create a balance in their life both in work and wellness.
